Colombia’s state-run energy giant Ecopetrol is being compelled to overhaul its strategy. Recent U.S. sanctions have effectively cut off direct gas imports from Venezuela, prompting the company to urgently seek alternative sources. This development may force one of the most significant strategic realignments in the firm’s recent history.

The gravity of the situation was underscored by a statement from Ecopetrol’s board chair, Mónica de Greiff. The U.S. sanctions not only prohibit gas imports from Venezuela but have also blocked the planned acquisition of fertilizer producer Monómeros.
