Rigetti Computing’s Quantum Roadmap Hits a Snag
09.01.2026 - 15:53:04Rigetti Computing has announced a delay to the commercial launch of its flagship 108-qubit quantum computer. The company's high-profile Cepheus-1-108Q system will now be available by the end of the first quarter of 2026, a later date than initially targeted. Management cited technical challenges during the final optimization phase as the reason for the postponement, stating an unwillingness to compromise on system performance.
In a decision prioritizing long-term capability over near-term market entry, Rigetti has chosen to initiate an additional chip design iteration. The delay stems from complications encountered with tunable couplers, components essential for managing interactions between qubits. Rather than bringing the system to market in its current state, the company is taking more time to refine the technology.
CEO Dr. Subodh Kulkarni emphasized that while progress remains strong, the extra development period is necessary to meet rigorous performance benchmarks. The Cepheus-1-108Q represents Rigetti's largest modular quantum computing system to date, constructed from twelve 9-qubit chiplets—an ambitious architecture proving more complex to finalize than anticipated.

The Precision Benchmark
At the core of the delay is a specific quality target. Rigetti is aiming for a median two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.5%. Current testing of the 108-qubit prototype shows it achieving 99%, a respectable figure but short of the internal goal. For context, the company's smaller-scale systems already operate at higher fidelity levels: its 9-qubit system reaches 99.7%, and its 36-qubit system attains 99.6%.
Market Context and Forthcoming Scrutiny
The announcement comes during a period of significant volatility for Rigetti's equity. The stock last closed at $25.25, a notable decline from its October 2025 price of $48.36. The company's current market capitalization stands at approximately $8.3 billion.
Investors will have an early opportunity to seek clarity on the revised timeline. The management team is scheduled to appear at the 28th Needham Growth Conference on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. CEO Kulkarni and CFO Jeff Bertelsen will participate in one-on-one meetings and a fireside chat, offering a direct forum for questions regarding the updated roadmap and the financial implications of the extended development cycle.
