Güglingen, 18 August 2025 – The Baden-Württemberg-based solar specialist hep solar and the Protestant Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck (PCKW) are launching a cooperation to develop new solar projects on open spaces owned by the PCKW. The municipalities, church districts, institutions, and foundations of the PCKW have around 10,000 undeveloped plots of land at their disposal. As part of the agreement, the PCKW is making these areas available as potential sites for analysis as part of the local community and as a stakeholder. Solar specialist hep solar has already analyzed initial potential sites, taking into account various factors such as soil conditions, the type of adjacent areas (e.g. protected areas, residential areas or forest areas) and the size of the sites. For sites deemed potentially suitable, hep solar will drive forward the project development, which includes planning, construction, commissioning, electricity marketing, and project financing. The local municipalities will decide on this. It is possible that they will lease their land to hep solar. Alternatively, they could – also in association with other landowners – operate photovoltaic systems themselves and commission hep solar or other companies to do so. The cooperation is part of a broader initiative by the Protestant Church, which is increasingly committed to climate protection and renewable energies in more and more regions. Many church communities are currently switching their own energy supply to green electricity from wind and solar power, such as the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau, with which hep solar has been cooperating since 2023 and for which it is currently developing its first projects. Churches as players in the energy transition “There is enormous potential for renewable energies in the use of church land. Churches have significant land resources and can therefore make a major contribution to the energy transition in Germany,” says Martin Vogt, Global Head of Project Development at hep solar. The PCKW itself sees the project as part of its spiritual responsibility. “As a church, we see it as our responsibility to actively contribute to climate protection,” says Timo Koch, Head of Construction and Real Estate and responsible for environmental issues at the PCKW. The partnership that has now been agreed will enable the state church’s land to be used sensibly for the generation of renewable energies.
